The Escape Room Game Team-Building Tips
It’s just another Monday morning and you look at the projects you’ve been assigned for the day. One of them has a note attached: “Please speak with Bob and help him out.”
“Who is this Bob?” you wonder.
Oh, right. They’re the new recruit that will be coming in today. It’s their first day.
This is going to be awkward.
How are you supposed to approach them? How do you strike up a conversation? And what exactly are you supposed to help them with?
Situations like these aren’t uncommon, especially when you’re too busy to interact with your colleagues. Lunch breaks are another affair. You practically live at your desk.
So when you’re going with the office to an escape game, you’re probably worried about two things:
- How to interact with people.
- How to interact with people.
But escape rooms can actually help connect with people. They’re an excellent way to improve your team-building skills.
With that in mind, here are a few tips to take into consideration to help improve your communication skills and build a connection with your teammates:
Tip # 1: Make It Incentive-Based
Here’s a suggestion: whichever team escapes first gets a gift hamper or free lunch.
Incentives help motivate people. And if you add cash prizes, the competition increases!
So, you can make this suggestion to your boss. It’s the perfect way to get people together for a common cause/goal:
Winning the game.
Tip # 2: Strategize Beforehand
Obviously, you have no idea what’s in store when you’ll get there. But the teams will be decided beforehand.
So make sure you strategize before the start of the game. Gather everyone before the trip and divide tasks. Look up how escape games work and you can plan accordingly.
Of course, part of the fun of escape games is their spontaneity. But that doesn’t mean you can’t mentally prepare yourself!
Tip # 3: Communicate Openly
Treat it as an exercise. It’s an activity, after all!
Remember that effective and open communication is the key to winning the game. It might be difficult at first but that doesn’t mean you can’t do it. Assign a target to each member and highlight what they’re supposed to do.
If someone has an idea, encourage them to chime in. Make notes for each member that they can follow.
Tip # 4: Don’t Focus on One Puzzle
Don’t stand there with your entire team, scratching your head because you can’t solve a puzzle. If you think the room isn’t working properly, know that the host is aware of everything.
One of the best things about escape rooms is that there’s always something to be done. Instead of wasting time on one puzzle, shift your focus to something else.
Shift your focus to another activity or assign one or two members of your team to break the code for that certain puzzle.
The rest of the team should move onto other things. But if you can’t solve that one mystery within 5 minutes, you can ask the host for clues.
Tip # 5: Relax and Enjoy the Experience!
Don’t force your teammates to solve the puzzles. Remember that it’s an activity that’s supposed to be fun and engaging. It’s not a competition.
You want to have fun with everyone and ensure that everyone has a positive, unforgettable experience!
